My washing machine is noisy, is there anything I can do about it?
Yes. When the wash programme starts the high speed spin cycle it is here where most noise and vibration will be noticed. A few basic checks will ensure noise and excessive vibration is kept to a minimum. The location of your washing machine is very important. Ensure it is positioned on a flat and level surface. A washing machine that doesn’t sit firmly in place will undoubtedly be thrown around on higher spin speeds. This could cause damage to the machine and surrounding furniture.
The weight and types of clothes within the drum also matter. By following the manufactures guidance notes you will be taking a big step in getting the most from your washing machine.
My washing machine has an awful smell. What can I do?
Some machines leave a fusty smell inside the washing machine drum or on the clothes themselves if washes are repeatedly done on the 40°C programme or lower. These awful smells can be caused by a bacterial build up or fungus which is hard to destroy without the use of washing liquids/powders or high temperatures. Continually washing at low temperatures allows sludge and mould to grow on the rubber seal or inside the washing machine's detergent drawer. By performing a service wash (60°C+) program once a month any bacteria in the drum or seal will be killed off. The trend of using 40ºC washes shows no sign of abating and the use of even lower temperatures to wash looks certain to happen.
Which programmes to use?
Modern washing machines have a vast array of programs to choose from. The more widely used ones for washing, rinses and spinning are here:
Quick wash program
A quick wash program is ideal for clothes that aren't too dirty. This programme takes between 50 and 70 minutes to complete.
Sort wash program
By generally halving the maximum load capacity you can use this short wash programme. In under 30 minutes your washing will be finished.
Reduced-ironing program
A programme developed for the big brand marketing departments in order to sell more washing machines. There is very little difference in results when comparing this programme with a standard wash programme.
Delicates and woollens program
Developed for silk or wool-mixture clothes that would suffer damage if used on standard wash programmes. Pure new wool should only be washed using the wool program. Any other types of wool must always be hand washed.
Economy wash or half load?
This program can be used to reduce running costs by using less water and electricity for smaller wash loads. If a model doesn’t have an economy wash or half-load option then it might be fitted with a sensor to determine the amount of laundry in the drum instead. The sensor automatically adjusts the amount of water and electricity.
Handwash program
Ideal for cashmere and silk products. This is a gentle wash programme that reduces damage to these delicate materials.
Super quick Wash
Quality washing machines such as Bosch have a fast wash program that takes about 15 minutes.
